Microsoft Windows has been the most popular operating system for all computers throughout the world. Initial Stages of Microsoft Windows OS

The first ever operating system from the Microsoft Windows family was introduced in 1985. Named as Microsoft Windows 1.0, it was an extension to the MS-DOS. It lacked many features that would make it an operating system. Soon came the Microsoft Windows 2.0 in 1987 that became more popular than the earlier version. Microsoft Windows 3.0 launched in 1990 became a big commercial hit with more than a million copies sold in the first half of the year. It had many reasons to be so popular, the most important being the user interface that it provided along with the multitasking capabilities. Windows NT released in 1993 was considered to be having a more professional approach. It was the first ever professional operating system by Microsoft and the first ever to use preemptive multitasking. Later came the Windows 95 and Windows 98 versions in the years 1995 and 1998.

Recent Versions of Microsoft Windows OS

In 2000, Microsoft released its Windows 2000 operating system. It became a big hit with masses and especially the office users. To replace this Windows 2000 came in the Windows 2003 in 2003. Windows 2003 was equipped with many new features over the Windows 2000 version. Though all these different versions marked their presence the one product that gained tremendous popularity was the Microsoft Windows XP that was launched in 2001. Released in two different editions, Home and Professional, Windows XP became a common word in homes as well as offices. Even today it is being used in many organisations and by many home PC users. It provides great user interface and is much easier to work with. The latest one from the family of Microsoft Windows OS, is the Windows Vista released in the beginning of 2007. Containing plenty of new and exciting features along with great user interface it is being used in many systems today. Windows Vista has many technical changes that makes it versatile in its operations. It has many versions of it available in the market.
